The aim is to come together as a community of both queer people and allies to provide examples of success within the LGBTQIA+ community and offer networking opportunities. The symposium will feature talks in which queer researchers discuss their science and how this connects with their own journey as a queer person.
The talks are meant to be accessible, so you don’t need to be a scientist to attend. The meeting is aimed at the full STEMM community and features people in academic science, engineers with industry experience, and clinical health professionals.

 

Some of our highlight speakers include (but are not limited to):
Dr Mohammad Taha – Research Fellow at the Melbourne University – They focus on multidisciplinary science bridging materials science, sustainability, and electronic Engineering.

Prof Bob Wong – Head, Behavioural Ecology Research Group at Monash – His research focuses on animal behaviour and mating practices.

Dr Karelle Siellez – Lecturer at University of Tasmania – They are an internationally recognised for contributions to research in gamma-ray bursts, kilonovae, supernovae, and gravitational waves. (See Karelle’s TED talk here.)

Dr Sav Zwickl – Trans Health Research Fellow at University of Melbourne – Their research focuses on data driven approaches to study the health and wellbeing of transgender people.

Dr Judy Tang – Director at Invictus Health – She has over 10 years experience in clinical neuropsychology, and is a current Board Director for the Victorian Pride Centre. (See Dr Tang talk about the intersection of queer and multicultural communities here).

Abstract Submission
We want you tell your story too! We are no longer seeking abstract submissions for talks, but we may accept posters if they arrive with time for us to accommodate. We are looking for submissions from LGBTQIA+ researchers across all areas of STEMM and all career levels (undergrad all the way to professor). We will select talks in late October.

Special Session on Trans Health & Wellbeing
There will be a special session highlighting research into transgender health & wellbeing. Given current day issues facing this community, we aim to provide information from cutting edge researchers in this area. This will include results from the Trans Health Research Group at University of Melbourne and the MCRI group who has recently been awarded a large grant to lead research in this area.

 

Trans & Gender Diverse Networking
Due to the growing number of young trans researchers we aim to make a special effort to generate connections from this group. There will be a closed door networking & discussion session for trans and gender diverse people. We are hopeful to connect younger trans researchers with those more senior. We be very grateful to especially connect with any such people in your centre.
